Palgrave is a registered trademark in the European Union and other countries, people skills pdf download. ISBN 0———2 This book is printed on paper suitable for recycling and made from fully managed and sustained forest sources. A catalogue record for this book is available from the British Library. This includes health and social care staff, social workers, staff in professions allied to medicine, youth workers, counsellors, advisors, advocates, personnel officers and other managers, teachers — especially those with pastoral duties — and others involved in helping people deal with the problems and challenges they face.

Because of this wide readership, I have concentrated on what I see as core issues in dealing with people and their problems. Consequently, not all aspects of people work will be covered, although the issues addressed here should have wide application across a variety of work settings and tasks. This is intended to be a generic term to incorporate the variety of terms used within different professional groupings.

By focusing on a number of issues that apply to a wide range of people work situations I am hoping to draw attention to the common themes and elements, the common problems and potential solutions.

Each professional group has its own traditions, values and concerns, and I do not underestimate the importance of professional identity, people skills pdf download. However, there is also much to be gained by the different disciplines recognising the common ground, and therefore creating far more opportunities for effective cooperation and collaboration. Working in partnership with service users is a recurring theme throughout this book, but we should also not forget the importance of working in partnership with colleagues from other disciplines.

People workers face a number of difficult challenges in their work and often have to draw on their own personal resources to people skills pdf download to the demands of the job. Such work is rarely simple or straightforward, and can sometimes be painful in so far as it may touch on hurtful experiences we have had in our own lives. In other words, the book is intended to help people workers take a step back from their work, with all its subtleties, complexities and demands, and try to develop a clear focus on what needs to be done, identify what progress can be made and what lessons can be learned from the process.

The book covers a lot of ground in a relatively short space, but it should provide you with the basics of each area addressed and, people skills pdf download, ideally, the insight and motivation to continue learning — to use the book as a foundation for a continuous process of professional development. As a trainer and consultant working with a wide variety of organizations I have encountered so many different situations in which the skills of dealing with people sensitively and constructively have been crucial in achieving success, or where their absence has proven detrimental or even disastrous.

My belief in the importance of people skills has therefore been deepened and reinforced by my people skills pdf download since completing the first edition. I have been delighted to see the book being used so widely and being so well received, particularly by students, many of whom have told me that they have found the book very helpful indeed in carrying out their professional duties in practice situations.

This edition has been updated and expanded. It includes four new chapters. Part II now includes a chapter on influencing skills, while Part III has been augmented by a chapter people skills pdf download the skills involved in decision-making, people skills pdf download. As with the first edition, the aim is not to attempt to provide a comprehensive account of the issues relevant to each topic, but rather to lay the foundations for future study and development and to offer guidelines to help readers address the many challenges of working with people and their problems.

NEIL THOMPSON xiii Acknowledgements In writing this book in both its incarnations I was fortunate to have the support and assistance of a number of people. This book represents much of the learning I was fortunate people skills pdf download to be able to acquire as a practitioner and manager. With this in mind, my thanks must go people skills pdf download Bob Maclaren for not only his helpful comments on the earlier draft but also the considerable amount I learned from him over the years. Similarly, I owe a great deal to Andy Whitgreave and Clive Curtis of Cheshire County Council for having provided such fertile soil for learning.

Jo Campling has remained a trusted friend and advisor over the years and her influence continues to be felt here too.

Catherine Gray and Jo Digby at the publishers once again deserve mention for their helpful responses to the various queries and requests. I am also grateful to Judy Marshall for her excellent copy-editing work.

In covering such a wide range of skills and issues, it is inevitable that an in-depth analysis is not going to be possible. It is therefore important that we recognize, right from the start, that this is an introductory text. That is, it offers the beginnings of a thorough understanding of people skills but will not provide all the answers.

This book will not make you an expert in people skills but will equip you to move in that direction. It will provide you with a brief and accessible introduction to the key aspects of working with people, twenty-four in total. These twenty-four areas are people skills pdf download into three main categories: personal effectiveness, interaction skills and intervention skills. Personal effectiveness skills such as assertiveness and stress management have an important part to play in so far as they help to ensure that we make the most of the personal resources available to us.

Interaction skills such as interviewing and managing conflict are also central in so far as they help us to handle our dealings with other people as constructively as possible. Intervention skills such as assessment and planning are a vital part of effective work with people in a variety of settings, as they help to ensure that we are clear about what we are trying to achieve and how we are going to go about it.

To a certain extent, the categories are arbitrary. That is, there is no hard and fast rule as to which chapter should go into which section of the people skills pdf download. For example, assertiveness is presented here as a personal effectiveness skill but could equally be seen as an interaction skill. The point remains, however, that all these skills are fundamental aspects of good practice. There are two problems with this point of view: 1.

It is incorrect We take many of our skills for granted to the extent that we assume they are qualities — we do not realize that they are in fact skills that we have learned.

xv xvi Introduction 2. It is self-defeating By regarding people skills pdf download as qualities, we create artificial barriers to progress and development.

Rather than begin people skills pdf download process of learning a new skill, we may sometimes find excuses for not doing so by presenting the skill as a quality. What are commonly regarded as qualities, then, are more accurately presented as learned behaviours, people skills pdf download.

This is an important point to note, people skills pdf download, as it means that we all have the potential for learning new skills, for developing the qualities that we see as valuable for people work. In view of this, it is essential that we challenge this misconception and adopt a positive attitude towards skill development. What is needed, then, to get the most out of this book, is a confident outlook, people skills pdf download, a positive attitude towards learning, and a recognition that developing new skills often involves giving up old habits.

But this is the price we have to pay for learning and developing — we have to be prepared to change aspects of our behaviour. Certain skills come more easily to some people than to others — some people have to work very hard to develop skills that others have no difficulty in acquiring. The fact that we sometimes have to work hard to develop a particular skill should not be used as an excuse for not people skills pdf download skill development very seriously.

Change is part of learning, and so we should not be too surprised to discover that a refusal to change amounts to a refusal to learn. Learning will not happen spontaneously — we have to be ready for it and commit ourselves to it. Such a way of going about our business will not only make our work boring and unsatisfying, people skills pdf download, it is also dangerous, in the sense that it desensitizes us to potential problems and pitfalls Thompson, a.

Sometimes, the emotional aspects of our work can be painful and difficult to deal with. Similarly, the feelings aroused by learning can be problematic. For example, some aspects of learning can appear to be quite threatening. Some situations we encounter in learning can trigger off painful memories of past experiences and leave us feeling very uncomfortable. It is therefore important that we recognize that the process of learning involves feelings as well as thoughts and actions.

It is also a crucial part of learning, in so far as much of our learning derives from doing. That is, although there is considerable advantage in gathering relevant information and people skills pdf download a knowledge base, people skills pdf download, this is not enough on its own.

Learning also involves putting those ideas into practice. In short, learning is about developing skills as well as knowledge. The Think—Feel—Do framework is therefore an important part of the process of learning, and it is one to which I shall refer again from time to time throughout the book, especially as the framework is also helpful in understanding doing people work, as well as learning about it.

It may be xviii Introduction helpful for you to bear these three aspects of learning in mind as you work your way through the book. Of course, there is no need for you to work through the book, step by step. At one level, there is nothing wrong in using the book in this way, but there are benefits to be gained from working through it, people skills pdf download, chapter by chapter.

For example, there are recurring themes which can add to your learning as you build up your knowledge. A step-by-step approach is therefore advised. In each of the chapters, people skills pdf download, there is a practical exercise to help you get to grips with the issues people skills pdf download. The Guide for Tutors and Trainers at the end of the book comments further about the use of the exercises people skills pdf download provides additional group exercises to be used as part of a training course or educational programme.

In covering such a wide range of issues within one book, I have sought to keep a balance in terms of breadth of coverage and depth of analysis — the outcome is inevitably a compromise between the two. However, another balance that has been important to pursue is that between what are seen albeit simplistically as characteristic masculine and feminine approaches to practice. I have attempted to combine the disciplined approach of a systematic practice with a clear focus on objectives typically seen as a masculine approach with the sensitivity and flexibility of a practice that takes account of human emotions, uncertainty and unpredictability typically seen as a feminine approach.

It is my view that good practice is based not on being either systematic or flexible — it is necessary to combine both, to get the best of people skills pdf download worlds, if we are to people skills pdf download the chances of our practice being effective.
